The area around Alamogordo is known for its natural beauty, with the White Sands National Park located just 15 miles away. The park features miles of white sand dunes made of gypsum crystals, and is a popular tourist destination.

Alamogordo is also known for its connection to the historic Trinity test, a nuclear weapon test that was conducted in 1945 as part of the Manhattan Project. The site of the test is now part of the White Sands Missile Range, which is located just outside the city.
