Alberobello

Alberobello is a small town located in the region of Apulia, in southern Italy. It is known for its unique and picturesque architecture, featuring traditional limestone houses with cone-shaped roofs, known as trulli. These trulli are a UNESCO World Heritage site and are the main attraction of Alberobello.

The town is believed to have been founded in the 16th century, and the trulli houses were originally built as temporary shelters for agricultural workers. However, they have now become permanent residences and tourist accommodations. The trulli are made entirely of local stone, with no mortar used in their construction. The roofs are made by stacking limestone slabs in a conical shape, and each trullo is adorned with various symbols and motifs, often painted in white, which have different meanings.

Walking through the narrow streets of Alberobello feels like stepping back in time. The town is divided into two main areas: Rione Monti and Aia Piccola. Rione Monti is the larger and more touristy area, with a higher concentration of trulli. The streets are lined with shops selling local crafts, souvenirs, and traditional food products. Aia Piccola, on the other hand, is a quieter and more residential area, where you can see trulli that are still inhabited by local residents.

In addition to exploring the trulli, visitors to Alberobello can also visit the Trullo Sovrano, which is the only two-story trullo in the town. It has been converted into a museum, showcasing the traditional way of life in Alberobello. The town also has several churches, such as the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio, which is located in the heart of Rione Monti and is built entirely in the trullo style.
