AltaVista was one of the first web search engines to gain widespread popularity in the United States during the late 1990s. It was launched in December 1995 by Digital Equipment Corporation and quickly became the go-to search engine for many internet users. Like its competitors, AltaVista used a web crawler to index and catalog web pages, allowing users to perform keyword searches and find relevant content. At its peak, AltaVista was processing 80 million searches per day and was considered one of the top search engines in the world.
However, AltaVista's dominance was short-lived. In 1998, the company was purchased by Compaq and later sold to Overture Services in 2003, which was subsequently acquired by Yahoo! in the same year. AltaVista's decline began when Google entered the search engine market and quickly gained traction with its cleaner interface, faster search results, and more relevant content.
Despite numerous redesigns and attempts to improve its search algorithms, AltaVista struggled to keep up with Google's dominance and was finally shut down in 2013. Today, its legacy remains as a reminder of the early days of the internet and the rapid evolution of the search engine industry.
