Getting to know Audubon
The National Audubon Society, commonly known as Audubon, is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the conservation of birds and their habitats. The organization was founded in 1905 and named after John James Audubon, a renowned bird artist and naturalist.
Audubon has played a significant role in the history of conservation in the United States. In the early 1900s, the organization focused on the protection of bird species, such as the American bison and the whooping crane, from overhunting and habitat destruction. Their advocacy led to the establishment of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which provided federal protection for migratory birds and their habitats.
Today, Audubon has a presence in all 50 states and operates over 500 wildlife sanctuaries and nature centers. The organization continues its advocacy for bird conservation, as well as climate change action and the preservation of natural habitats. Audubon's efforts have helped to protect various bird species, including the bald eagle, peregrine falcon, and California condor.
