Getting to know Barbizon in France

Barbizon is a small village located in the Fontainebleau forest in France, about 55 kilometers southeast of Paris. It is famous for being the birthplace of the Barbizon School, a group of 19th-century landscape painters who were inspired by the beauty of the forests, rocks, and streams in the area.

The Barbizon School was active from the 1830s to the 1870s and included artists such as Jean-Francois Millet, Theodore Rousseau, and Charles-Francois Daubigny. They rejected the formal, idealized landscapes that were popular at the time and instead focused on painting the natural world as they saw it. The Barbizon School is seen as a precursor to the Impressionist movement.

Today, Barbizon is a popular tourist destination and a center for artists. The village has preserved much of its historic architecture and charm, and visitors can wander the narrow streets and alleys, visit the Auberge Ganne where many of the Barbizon School artists stayed, and explore the surrounding forest that inspired so many important works of art.
