Getting there

How to reach Birkenau in Germany

Birkenau is a small village located in Germany. It is known for its historical significance and is home to the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Here are the steps to reach Birkenau:

Getting to know Birkenau

Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz II, was a concentration and extermination camp located in the city of Oswiecim in southern Poland. During World War II, Birkenau was one of the most notorious Nazi death camps, responsible for the deaths of over 1.1 million people, primarily Jews, but also Roma, homosexuals, political dissidents, and others considered "undesirable" by the Nazi regime.

Located about 50 km west of Krakow, Birkenau was established in October 1941 and featured a network of barracks, gas chambers, crematoria, and other facilities designed to facilitate large-scale murder and disposal of bodies. While some prisoners were used for forced labor, most were killed upon arrival, often within hours of stepping off the trains that brought them to the camp.

Today, Birkenau is a poignant memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, with preserved remnants of the camp complex open to visitors. Despite the horrors perpetrated there, it remains an important historical site for understanding the atrocities of the Nazi regime and the importance of remembrance and vigilance in the face of totalitarianism.
