Getting to know Brecht

Bertolt Brecht was a prominent German playwright, theatre director and poet of the 20th century. He is best known for his plays that reflected his Marxist beliefs and his innovative theatre techniques that challenged traditional forms of theatre. Although born in Germany, Brecht spent a significant part of his life in exile due to his political beliefs and was even banned from returning to his homeland.

During his years in exile, Brecht spent some time in Belgium where he worked on some of his most famous plays including "Mother Courage and Her Children" and "The Good Person of Szechwan". He also worked with a group of Belgian actors to develop his concept of "epic theatre". This involved incorporating techniques such as breaking the fourth wall, using songs and music, and presenting events out of chronological order to encourage the audience to think critically about what they were seeing.
