Getting to know Buchheim

Buchheim is a municipality in the district of Landsberg am Lech in Bavaria, Germany. The town became famous due to Lothar-Günther Buchheim, a writer, painter and art collector who was born here in 1918. He is best known for his autobiographical novel "Das Boot" (The Boat) which became an international bestseller in the 1970s and was adapted into an award-winning film directed by Wolfgang Petersen in 1981.

Buchheim was not only a successful author but also a collector of art, especially of German Expressionism. He opened the Buchheim Museum of Imagination on Lake Starnberg in the early 2000s, which is home to one of the world's largest collections of German Expressionist art. The museum complex, designed by architect Günter Behnisch, consists of several buildings connected by walkways and bridges and features over 1,200 works of art by artists such as Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

Buchheim passed away in 2007 at the age of 89, but his legacy continues to inspire art lovers around the world. His hometown pays tribute to him by hosting an annual literary festival, the Buchheim Lectures, which attracts prominent writers and thinkers from Germany and beyond.
