Chowchilla is a city located in Madera County, California, United States. It is situated in the central San Joaquin Valley, approximately 16 miles northwest of Madera and 15 miles south of Merced. The city of Chowchilla was established in 1916 as a result of the construction of the Central California Traction Company railroad. The name "Chowchilla" is derived from the indigenous Native American tribe called the Chaushila Yokut tribe, who inhabited the region for centuries.
