Ella Baker was an African American civil rights and human rights activist born on December 13, 1903, in Norfolk, Virginia. She grew up in rural North Carolina and later attended Shaw University in Raleigh, where she became involved in student activism. Throughout her life, she worked with numerous civil rights organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Baker was a key figure in organizing the 1960s sit-in movement, which helped desegregate public spaces and institutions. She passed away on December 13, 1986, in New York City.
