Fort Dix

Fort Dix is a United States Army installation located in Burlington County, New Jersey. It is situated approximately 16 miles southeast of Trenton, the state capital, and covers an area of about 42,000 acres. Established in 1917 as Camp Dix, it was named after Major General John Adams Dix, a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The installation was initially used as a training and staging ground for soldiers during World War I.

Over the years, Fort Dix has played a crucial role in various military operations and conflicts. During World War II, it served as a training center for Army units and was also used as a prisoner-of-war camp. In the 1950s, the installation underwent significant expansion and became a major training site for the Army Reserve and National Guard. It continued to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of the military, serving as a mobilization and deployment center during the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terrorism.

Today, Fort Dix is part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, a tri-service military facility that also includes McGuire Air Force Base and Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst. As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission, the three installations were merged to enhance joint operations and improve efficiency. Fort Dix remains an active Army installation, providing support to various units, including the 174th Infantry Brigade, the 72nd Field Artillery Brigade, and the 99th Regional Support Command.
