In fact, the town was known as the "Freak capital of the world" due to the large number of performers who called it home.

Many circus performers would winter in Gibsonton, establishing permanent residences and even setting up their own circus grounds. This created a tight-knit community of performers who lived and worked together throughout the year. Some of the famous performers who lived in Gibsonton include the famous elephant trainer, Hugo Schmitt and Al Tomaini, the "Giant of Borneo".
