Gingee

Gingee, also known as Senji, is a historic town located in the Viluppuram district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated at an elevation of about 170 meters above sea level and is known for its magnificent fort complex. The town is surrounded by three hills, namely Krishnagiri, Rajagiri, and Chandrayandurg, which together form the Gingee Fort.

The Gingee Fort is a remarkable architectural marvel that has stood the test of time. It is a massive fortification that spreads over an area of about 3 square kilometers and comprises of three concentric walls. The fort complex is adorned with various structures, including palaces, granaries, temples, and mosques. One of the notable attractions within the fort is the majestic Kalyana Mahal, a palace built in the Indo-Islamic style. The fort also houses a granary known as the Raja Gopuram, which is an impressive structure with a height of about 30 meters.

Gingee has a rich historical significance and has witnessed the rule of various dynasties over the centuries. The fort complex was originally built by the Chola dynasty in the 9th century and was later fortified by the Vijayanagara Empire. It was then captured by the Marathas and later came under the control of the Mughals. The fort finally fell into the hands of the British East India Company in the 18th century. The diverse influences of these different rulers can be observed in the architectural styles and structures present within the fort.
