Iturbide

Iturbide was a prominent figure in the history of Mexico. He played a crucial role in the country's struggle for independence from Spain and served as the first emperor of Mexico. Born on September 27, 1783 in Valladolid, New Spain (present-day Morelia, Mexico), Iturbide initially served in the Spanish army, fighting against the Mexican independence movement. However, he soon switched sides and joined the insurgent forces led by Agustín de Iturbide.

Iturbide's leadership and military prowess were instrumental in securing Mexico's independence. He played a key role in the Plan of Iguala, which outlined the conditions for an independent Mexico and promised unity and equality for all Mexicans. As a result, Mexico gained its independence on September 27, 1821.

Recognizing his achievements and popularity, Iturbide was proclaimed Emperor of Mexico in May 1822. However, his reign was short-lived. Facing opposition from various factions, including liberals and republicans, Iturbide abdicated the throne in March 1823. He was exiled but returned to Mexico in 1824, only to be captured and executed on July 19, 1824, marking the end of his turbulent and tragic journey.
