Jega: A Key Figure in Nigerian Politics

Jega, full name Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, is a prominent Nigerian academic and former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Born on January 11, 1957, in Jega, Kebbi State, Jega has played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria's political landscape.

As the head of INEC, Jega oversaw the conduct of Nigeria's general elections in 2011 and 2015, which are considered to be some of the most credible and transparent in the country's history. Despite significant challenges, including voter apathy, logistical issues, and security concerns, Jega's leadership ensured a relatively peaceful and fair electoral process.

Prior to his role at INEC, Jega had a distinguished career in academia, specifically in the field of political science. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ahmadu Bello University and his PhD in political science from Northwestern University in the United States. Jega went on to serve as a professor and head of the political science department at Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria.

Jega's commitment to transparency and integrity in the electoral process earned him both national and international recognition. In 2011, he received the Nigerian National Order of the Federal Republic, one of the country's highest honors, for his exceptional contributions to democratic governance.
