Getting to know Katipunan
Katipunan: The Birthplace of Philippine Revolution
Katipunan, also known as the Kataas-taasang, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, holds a significant place in the history of the Philippines. It was in this secret society that Philippine revolutionaries, led by Andres Bonifacio, took their first collective steps towards fighting for independence from Spanish colonial rule.
Located in the Philippines, Katipunan was established on July 7, 1892, with the aim of liberating the country from more than three centuries of Spanish oppression. The society served as a hub for like-minded individuals who sought freedom, equality, and national sovereignty. It provided a platform for impassioned discussions, secret meetings, and the planning of revolutionary activities.
Within the walls of Katipunan, members swore an oath to defend their Motherland and promise loyalty to the cause. They utilized various rituals, symbols, and secret codes to ensure the security of their meetings, as the Spanish authorities were quick to suppress any form of dissent.
The spark of revolution eventually ignited on August 23, 1896, when a Spanish friar discovered the existence of Katipunan. This revelation forced the revolutionaries to take up arms prematurely, triggering the Philippine Revolution that would last until 1898.
Today, Katipunan continues to be celebrated as a symbol of courage, unity, and the unwavering pursuit of freedom. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought for Philippine independence, inspiring generations to uphold the values of patriotism and national pride.
