Kingman was founded in 1882 and named after Lewis Kingman, a civil engineer who surveyed the area for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The city played a significant role in the development of transportation in the American West, serving as a major stop on Route 66 and later becoming a hub for the Union Pacific Railroad.
