Kiruna is a town located in northern Sweden, above the Arctic Circle. It has a population of about 20,000 and is the largest town in the Swedish Lapland. What makes Kiruna unique is its geographical location and the fact that it is situated on top of the world's largest iron-ore deposit. The town is an important mining center and has been since the late 1800s.
Kiruna is known for its midnight sun during the summer months, where the sun never sets, and its polar night during winter, where the sun never rises. Visitors to Kiruna can enjoy various outdoor activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, and ice fishing during the winter months and hiking, cycling and kayaking during the summer. The town is also home to the world-renowned Icehotel, where visitors can stay in rooms made entirely out of ice.
However, Kiruna is also facing a unique problem due to the mining activities. The ground beneath the town is slowly sinking as the iron ore deposits are being extracted. Consequently, the town is currently undergoing relocation, with the authorities planning to move the entire town center 3 kilometers to the east. This ambitious project will take several years to complete and will ensure the long-term sustainability of the town.
