Lirey is best known for its association with the Shroud of Turin, a linen cloth believed by many to be the burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth. The shroud was supposedly kept in the village's Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church for more than a century, but scholars have cast doubt on its authenticity. Today, the shroud is kept in Turin, Italy.
