Maitland is a suburban city in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. A small portion of the city is in Seminole County. The population was 15,751 at the 2010 census. The city is named for Fort Maitland.
Maitland is one of the oldest incorporated suburban municipalities in central Florida. The area was previously inhabited by Timucua Native Americans. The town was originally named Lake Maitland, and development began in the area after the Civil War. In 1885, the area was renamed Maitland in honor of Edward Luther Maitland, a former captain with the Confederacy who later moved to Florida and co-founded the city of Maitland.
Maitland is home to many parks and lakes, and its downtown area has a number of well-preserved historic buildings. The city also hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year, including the Maitland Art Center's Spring and Fall Art Festivals, the Maitland Farmer's Market, and the Maitland Rotary Arts Festival.
