The castle, Castello Inferiore, was built in the mid-14th century and was used as a fortress during battles between the rivaling cities of Venice and Vicenza. Today, the castle serves as a venue for cultural events such as concerts and exhibitions, and is open for guided tours.
The game of chess played in Marostica is a live performance with real people dressed in medieval costumes, and is known as the Partita a Scacchi con Personaggi in Costume. The game takes place on a giant chessboard painted in the main square, and involves over 500 performers and participants. The next game is scheduled to take place in September 2022.
