Minamata

Minamata, a city located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, is primarily known for its devastating mercury poisoning incident known as the Minamata disease. The disease, named after the city, occurred between the 1950s and 1960s, making it a significant environmental disaster in Japan's history.

The disease was caused by industrial wastewater containing methylmercury, discharged directly into Minamata Bay by the Chisso Corporation, a chemical company operating in the area. The toxic waste contaminated the local seafood, particularly shellfish like fish and shellfish, which were key protein sources for the residents who heavily relied on fishing and the bay's resources for their livelihood.
