Ntcheu

Ntcheu is a district located in the Central Region of Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa. It is one of the twenty-eight districts that make up the administrative divisions of Malawi. Situated approximately 100 kilometers northeast of the capital city, Lilongwe, this district covers an area of about 3,831 square kilometers.

Ntcheu boasts a diverse landscape, comprising both lowlands and highlands. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills, deep valleys, and vast plains. Several rivers, including the Bua, Lusangazi, and Lilongwe, flow through the district, providing a source of water for irrigation and domestic use. The population of Ntcheu consists mainly of the Chewa ethnic group, which is the largest ethnic group in Malawi. However, the district is also home to other ethnicities, such as the Yao and Ngoni. The people of Ntcheu primarily engage in subsistence farming, cultivating crops such as maize, cassava, beans, and tobacco. Fishing is also an important economic activity for those living near rivers or the nearby Lake Malawi.

The district is known for its rich cultural heritage, with traditional dances, music, and ceremonies being an integral part of the Chewa culture. The annual Gule Wamkulu festival, a secretive initiation ceremony for young men, is a significant cultural event celebrated in Ntcheu.
