Onate Spain was a prominent figure in the history of Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries. He was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who played a crucial role in the colonization and expansion of the Spanish Empire in the New World.

Born in 1550 in the Basque region of Spain, Oñate came from a noble family and received a high-quality education. He developed a strong interest in exploration and adventure from an early age. In 1595, he was appointed as the governor and captain-general of New Mexico, a vast territory in the present-day southwestern United States that was claimed by Spain.

Under Oñate's leadership, Spanish colonization in New Mexico reached its zenith. He established numerous settlements, including the capital city of Santa Fe, and implemented various policies to promote growth and development in the region. He encouraged Spanish settlers to relocate to New Mexico and introduced agriculture, ranching, and mining as key economic activities.

However, Oñate's rule was not without controversy. In 1599, he led an expedition known as the Acoma Massacre, during which his forces brutally attacked the native Acoma Pueblo tribe. Hundreds of Acoma men, women, and children were killed, and survivors were enslaved and mutilated. This event brought Oñate significant criticism and tarnished his reputation.
