Pontida is famous for its historic role in the struggle for Italian independence. In 1167, a league of Lombard cities was formed in Pontida to resist the oppression of the Holy Roman Empire. This event is commemorated every year on the last Sunday of May with a large festival, known as the Festa della Lega Lombarda.

The town also boasts some impressive architecture, including the Romanesque-style Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the two medieval towers that guard its entrance.
