Sort

Mongolia, a landlocked country located in East Asia, is known for its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. One of the most captivating aspects of this country is the traditional Mongolian practice of sort, a unique form of nomadic settlement. Sort, also known as a ger or yurt, is a portable dwelling that has been traditionally used by Mongolian herders for centuries.

Sorts are made of a collapsible latticed wood frame, covered with layers of felt and canvas, providing insulation from the extreme weather conditions of the region. These circular structures are easily assembled and disassembled, making them ideal for nomadic herding communities who frequently move their livestock to find fresh grazing pastures.

The interior of a sort is carefully arranged to serve multiple purposes. The central area, known as the toono, is reserved for the hearth, where a fire is lit to keep the inhabitants warm and also used for cooking. The rest of the space is divided into various sections for sleeping, storage, and living. The furnishings typically include wooden furniture, colorful rugs, and traditional decorations, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Mongolian people.

Sorts are not only practical and functional but also hold significant cultural importance in Mongolia. The nomadic lifestyle and connection to nature are deeply ingrained in the Mongolian identity, and the sort symbolizes this way of life.
