Yanga

Yanga is a small town located in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. It holds great historical significance as it was the first free town established by African slaves in the Americas. The town was founded in 1630 by Gaspar Yanga, an African prince who had been captured and sold into slavery. Yanga led a group of escaped slaves to establish their own community, known as San Lorenzo de los Negros, which later became Yanga.

The establishment of Yanga was a significant act of resistance against the oppressive Spanish colonial system. The town served as a refuge for escaped slaves, providing them with freedom and autonomy. Yanga and his followers successfully defended their community against multiple attacks by Spanish forces, ultimately leading to a negotiated agreement in 1637. This agreement recognized the independence of Yanga and granted it the status of a free town.
